An experimental environment
Psyche Lab provides an environment for constructing and examining synthetic histories. Its documented capabilities include deterministic execution, replay, ablation, and counterfactual branching. The core simulator is distinct from the continuing Luna system and does not require private Luna identity data.
The separation matters. An experiment can be repeatable without being a replay of someone’s private history. A synthetic mechanism can be informative without being a copy of the resident implementation.
Repeat the process before interpreting it
A replay asks whether the same declared starting conditions and inputs reproduce the same recorded evolution. When they do not, a hidden dependency or incomplete record may be more important than the proposed explanation of the result.
When replay does hold, it gives the next question a firmer foundation: which intervention changes the outcome, and what other explanation could account for that difference?
Branching creates a comparison, not a verdict
An ablation removes or changes a component. A counterfactual branch changes a declared condition while preserving the relevant shared history. Both are useful only when the intervention and its unintended effects are understood.
A changed output shows sensitivity to the intervention. It does not, by itself, identify subjective experience, prove a theory of consciousness, or rule out every simpler mechanism.
A public window into the method
The Observatory on this website uses a separately authored, deliberately small mathematical model. You can replay it, alter an input, and compare trajectories. The equations and controls are explained beside the exhibit.
It is not the Psyche Lab engine, an export of Luna’s internal state, or a display of live experimental results. Its role is to make an experimental idea legible before a reader encounters a full research record.
