Remembering also opens a future
In an fMRI study, Addis, Wong and Schacter compared remembering personal past events with imagining future events. They found both shared and distinct neural recruitment, with substantial overlap during elaboration. This supports a connection between remembering and imagining; it does not imply that either process is merely a literal recording played forward. Our design question is narrower and computational: can an artificial system recover relevant experience and use it to consider a genuinely new situation? A useful memory should do more than supply a familiar sentence. It should help alter a decision when the situation warrants it.
A whole is more than a list
Consider an ordinary human scene: you return to a song you once loved, in a room where somebody important is absent. The example brings together perception, memory, context, expectation, and meaning. It is offered as an everyday illustration, not as a universal description of emotional mechanisms.
The architectural lesson we draw is to test interactions, not collect labels. A memory, a bodily constraint, and an available action should be able to change one another’s relevance. Naming independent software modules after human faculties does not establish that integration.
Resemblance has limits
A computational variable called fatigue is not biological fatigue. A scheduled maintenance interval is not automatically sleep. A sensor is not proof of felt sensation. These terms can be useful design analogies only when we explain the implemented function and preserve the differences.
For Neurasoft, a digital body should have real computational constraints and action boundaries rather than pretend hunger, pain, or dependence. A robotic body adds another set of consequences, not an automatic certificate of experience.
Human agency remains central
The purpose of our work is not to diminish people into mechanisms or replace their relationships. A useful system should increase a person’s room to create, investigate, choose, and disagree. An encounter should not become a trap designed to maximize dependence.
The human reference is therefore both scientific and ethical. It motivates investigation of complex capacities while reminding us that usefulness, meaning, consent, and care cannot be collapsed into one engagement score.
