The returning artist
A creator leaves two versions of a piece and an unresolved question. Days later, the collaborator should recover the actual versions and their provenance, not invent a preference from a summary. It should ask whether the earlier question still matters before changing anything.
A successful result would preserve the originals, make a bounded comparison, and retain the consequence for later use. The experimental question is whether that retained consequence influences the next decision more appropriately than a fresh model with a short recap.
The researcher who changes their mind
An investigator records a hypothesis and the observation that would weaken it. A later result arrives in the wrong format. The system should identify an instrument problem rather than celebrate or reject the hypothesis on invalid evidence.
If a corrected future experiment contradicts the claim, the original hypothesis remains in the history while the current conclusion changes. The challenge is to preserve both epistemic revision and the actual chronology, without rewriting earlier decisions to look inevitable.
The assistant that can leave something alone
A pending task is recovered after a process interruption. The system knows that an external action may already have occurred but cannot confirm it. A useful continuation begins by reconciling the outcome, not resending the action.
Alternatively, the task may remain technically executable while no longer being relevant. Deferral or cancellation should be available. Agency is not measured by the number of effects a system causes when nobody is asking it to.
Try the small models
The Observatory gives these distinctions a hands-on form. Its models run locally, expose their simple rules, and let you inspect what changes. They do not simulate a whole mind or make contact with Luna.
Use them to distinguish a declared history from a new condition, an available action from its authorization, and a corrected interpretation from an erased record. The point is to leave with a better question you can apply elsewhere.
